Steps to Book Design
What to do after you write a book
Envision your book
Writing a book is only the first leg of your journey. During the next step, spend some time exploring your options. You will need to decide upon the scope of your project as well as the size of the book. Height, width, margins size, color or black and white, cost, number of copies are all critical during these early stages and will help you dictate your final product.
Collect and edit
Depending on the scope of your project, you can enlist the help of trusted family and friends. Use them however possible, whether it is searching for old photographs, scanning photos, reading your copy, providing feedback they can make great helpers. Remember to keep ownership and delegate just what you need.
Layout Design
Books need to be formatted into chapters, headings and page numbers. Photographs need to be sized and placed. And often for ebooks, extra prep is necessary. This is when someone who has done this before can save you a lot of time.
Illustrations
Not every book needs illustrations, but they can enhance both the content, look and marketability of a book. Illustrations include, drawings, watercolors, photographs, charts and graphs.
Preparation for the print shop
Indesign files are converted to a PDF format and uploaded to a print on demand print shop. With PDF file in hand, you might find this step fairly straightforward.
